Industrial School

Abbotsford Convent - Industrial SchoolIndustrial School: Abbotsford Convent - Industrial School
History
In 1868, JB Denny designed this building and it is now the oldest surviving one on site.  Links with early colonial architecture of NSW and Van Dieman’s Land are evidenced by the reveals framing each window and the quality of the face brick work.
The State Government provided the funding for the Industrial School as it was one of the network of such schools in the state.  Here, children who were the subject of ‘neglected and criminal’ court orders were housed.  They slept on the first floor and downstairs there was a refectory, work-rooms and a laundry.
Proposed use
Funds permitting, the downstairs space could be allocated to specialist film work the provision of which is not accommodated elsewhere in Melbourne. The large space above could provide a perfect living space/studio for international visiting artists.
