The Shirt and Skirt Market is home to Melbourne’s emerging designers.  Melbourne’s original quality fashion, accessories and craft market has moved to the historic Abbotsford Convent on the 3rd  Sunday of every month, with the first starting on Sunday, 17 June 2007 from 10am to 4pm.

Created as a community orientated, creative meeting two years ago, the Shirt and Skirt Market  is the brainchild of Binh Rey.  The market was created to assist young designers to sell their creative output and provide ‘profitable creative stepping stones’ for emerging designers and artisans.  Binh, originally a Sydney girl, longed for the vibrant, creative and community feel of the Paddington markets and turned this into a reality when the Shirt and Skirt Market dream was opened in 2004 as an organic and creative springboard for Melbourne’s immense design talent.  

For many new designers, the shift from the creative free-form environment of their personal sketchbooks or design school to a commercial setting is often a crippling experience – punctuated by logistical and cash flow issues. 

“In creating the Shirt and Skirt Market, I sought to establish a supportive vehicle for designers, whereby their works are showcased to a diverse and dynamic target market.  Interacting with and responding to their own customers is an important part of the development process and it allows their style to evolve organically”, explains Binh.

Featuring over twenty stalls, the Shirt and Skirt Market distinguishes itself from Melbourne’s existing markets though its commitment to locally designed and/or made fashion focus – with women’s, men’s and children’s wear stalls.  Complimenting the innovative and unashamedly beautiful fashions will be an eclectic mix of jewellery, bags and fashion accessories.
