St Heliers Street Gallery Exhibitions 2019
Expressions of interest now open for St Heliers Street Gallery exhibitions 2019
About the Gallery
Established in 2009, the Abbotsford Convent’s St Heliers Street Gallery (SHSG) showcases the diverse artistic talent of the Convent's studio community and Victoria’s wider creative community.
This gallery space is physically connected to Cam’s Kiosk, a partner of the gallery, to form a natural meeting place and hub for artistic activity.
The gallery provides an opportunity for cross-pollination and artistic dialogue within the tenant community, forming a key component of the Abbotsford Convent’s vision to be a unique arts, culture and learning precinct. St Heliers Street Gallery presents a year-round, four-week exhibition schedule and does not charge a commission on any works sold.
Expressions of interest are now open for those wishing to exhibit at St Heliers Street Gallery in 2019 – read on for details and requirements.
In our quest to be renowned for stimulating community engagement and cultural exchange through the wonderful and unexpected curiosities of our people and our place, the Abbotsford Convent delivers a unique program to enliven our place and our community.
Our ambition is bold and we partner with our community to transform people’s lives through diverse cultural experiences and the striking landscape of our place. We work with artists and creative industries leaders to engage with our unique site to transform the way our audiences experience art and place.
The ACF welcomes EoIs from all and any artists, designers and/or curators. EoIs can include visual and audio-visual arts, sound, design, multi and new media, craft, live art and performance. We welcome proposals by emerging and established artists for solo or group exhibitions.
While the St Heliers Street Gallery prioritises exhibitions from our existing Convent-based studio community, there are additional opportunities for exhibitions from artists, collectives and organisations outside of our studio community to be part of the program.
Cam’s Kiosk is a favourite café for locals, while in the evenings Cam’s turns into a bar, where you can often find the Convent’s artists and creative community enjoying some downtime after work.
Cameron Miller, the owner of Cam’s kiosk, offers curatorial and logistics experience and advice in the installation and de-installation of exhibitions, and his café team can collect deposits from people buying work from the gallery.
Cameron Miller works alongside the Abbotsford Convent Studio Coordinator to manage and coordinate the annual program of exhibitions.
St Heliers Street Gallery FAQ
Installation and de-installation of exhibitions are the sole responsibility of the exhibiting artist(s) and curator(s). SHSG can provide advice and guidance where necessary, however SHSG will not provide professional installation staff.
Approval must be sought before any alteration to the gallery is made. The artist must fund and arrange for any alteration (including equipment) and subsequent return of the gallery to its original condition.
Exhibiting artists and curators are required to obtain their own public liability and insurance cover. You will be required to provide proof of this as part of the artist agreement if selected.
Basic installation equipment is available via the SHSG with prior discussion, but any equipment required for exhibition installation of works, including gallery alteration, are to be provided by the artists.
